Seven score and twelve years ago, on November 19, 1863,\u00c2\u00a0Abraham Lincoln<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0delivered the\u00c2\u00a0Gettysburg Address<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0as part of the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Consecration of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

What a timeless, profound speech! \u00c2\u00a0In only 272 words, President Lincoln solemnly honored all who died in battle at that site and challenged the nation to forge forward in the cause of freedom.<\/p>\n

\n

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.<\/p>\n

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.<\/p>\n

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthat from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthat we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthat this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

President Lincoln was incorrect in one phrase, “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here.”<\/p>\n

On the contrary, although most have forgotten the 2 hour oration by Edward Everett that preceded President Lincoln\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s remarks, the President\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s speech has become one of the best known and most often quoted speeches in history.<\/p>\n

However, as a society we too often forget President Lincoln\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s challenge, which is just as relevant today as it was 152 years ago:<\/p>\n

we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthat this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
