On May 25, 1961,\u00c2\u00a0President John F. Kennedy announced his goal<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0of putting a man on the moon by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n

I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 in a very real sense, it will not be one man going to the moon–if we make this judgment affirmatively, it will be an entire nation. For all of us must work to put him there.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

What a thrill it was of living through those years of incredible innovation, splendid courage and diligent work by so many people. As President Kennedy said, it was not just one man going to the moon, it was a nation united in effort to get that astronauts there and bring them back.<\/p>\n
