{"id":776,"date":"2015-04-25T03:32:41","date_gmt":"2015-04-25T10:32:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ilovefreedom.com\/?p=776"},"modified":"2015-04-25T03:40:01","modified_gmt":"2015-04-25T10:40:01","slug":"happy-birthday-library-of-congress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ilovefreedom.com\/?p=776","title":{"rendered":"Happy Birthday, Library of Congress!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;\" title=\"loc.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/ilovefreedom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/loc.jpg\" alt=\"Libary of Congress Reading Room\" width=\"250\" height=\"168\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My father once said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriott.com\/culture-and-values\/marriott-family-history.mi\" target=\"blank\">Marriott family<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0liked the\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.utah.edu\/\" target=\"blank\">University of Utah<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0more than\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/home.byu.edu\/home\/\" target=\"blank\">Brigham Young University<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0They only gave BYU a\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marriott_Center\" target=\"blank\">basketball arena<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0They gave the UofU a\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.utah.edu\/\" target=\"blank\">library<\/a>!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that viewpoint is debatable, but one thing is true &#8211; 2015 years ago yesterday, the\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/\" target=\"blank\">Library of Congress<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0was established. As reported by\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/library-of-congress-established?et_cid=74280711&amp;et_rid=1211445576&amp;linkid=http%3a%2f%2fwww.history.com%2fthis-day-in-history%2flibrary-of-congress-established\" target=\"blank\">History.com<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>President John Adams approves legislation to appropriate $5,000 to purchase \u00e2\u20ac\u0153such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d thus establishing the Library of Congress. The first books, ordered from London, arrived in 1801 and were stored in the U.S. Capitol, the library\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first home. The first library catalog, dated April 1802, listed 964 volumes and nine maps.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/about\/\" target=\"blank\">welcome message<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0on the Library of Congress website,\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/bicentennial\/bios\/preserve\/billington.html\" target=\"blank\">James H. Billinton<\/a>, current\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Librarian_of_Congress\" target=\"blank\">Librarian of Congress<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The Library of Congress is the nation&#8217;s oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with millions of books, recordings, photographs, maps and manuscripts in its collections.<\/p>\n<p>The Library&#8217;s mission is to support the Congress in fulfilling its constitutional duties and to further the progress of knowledge and creativity for the benefit of the American people.<\/p>\n<p>As Librarian of Congress, I oversee the many thousands of dedicated staff who acquire, catalog, preserve, and make available library collections within our three buildings on Capitol Hill and over the Internet. I am pleased that you are visiting our Web site today, and I invite you return to it often.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/librarysciencelist.com\/25-coolest-things-about-library-of-congress\/\" target=\"blank\">According to LibraryScienceList.com<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The Library of Congress is the largest library in the United States. It features 883 miles of shelving, houses 155 million items total, and holds 33 million books that are written in 460 different languages.
